Though utilitarian ethics previously led doctors to areas they had never explored before, Kantian ethics have all but silenced these pioneers. The combination of these four pillars of medical ethics 7 are meant to guide researchers and clinicians in decisions they make regarding the lives of others. If individuals die in a clinical trial in order to benefit others, they are being used as a means and this is not ethical. Kant emphasized ensuring one ensure they never use people as a means, rather than an ends. Justice and autonomy, however, are more Kantian values and were introduced more prominently in medical practice after the paradigm shift of the 1960s. Beneficence and non-maleficence are aligned closely with utilitarianism, as they serve to ensure that researchers are trying to bring about maximum utility and do the least possible harm.
